(Elder) Twin Sister | Marianne Grace – Twin (not identical) sister. Half blooded Glamour sorcerer |
Morgan was born to a middle class family in Avalon. He would have a higher birth, but his family are descended from some of the original Montaigne ‘oppressors’ and since the withdrawal of Montaigne several years ago have never been able to rise higher in society. They are not the only family to have such a stigma, but the community is a small one. Many of the community have ties of blood to each other as they are often unable to find suitable ‘pure Avalon’ consorts. So, many marry into the low echelons of Montaigne nobility, as Morgan’s father did. This grants social station to the Avalon family and property to the Montaigne family. Morgan’s mother’s family (the Allanté Du Doré) have holdings in Doré near the coast, but it is little more than an estate, a small vineyard and an old name.
As Morgan’s parents were both sorcerers, it was hoped they would sire children with powerful abilities. Sadly it was not to be. Morgan and his twin sister Marianne were born with sorcery. However they are each half blooded, him with Porté and she with Glamour. This was a disappointment to the family, but both children were loved all the same. The only sadness was that without full sorcery their chances of marrying well were significantly reduced.
Morgan grew up in a life of near privilege. His family had money, but they had to keep a farm and manage their holdings to keep their fortune. Morgan did not lead a life of balls and glamorous courtly events. His family were often not invited, being descended from the Montaigne. However he wanted for very little and grew up happy in the countryside in Avalon.
Eventually he fell in love with a local girl called Elaine. She wasn’t quite up to his social station, being the daughter of a local merchant. However her family had money, but no name. Her father was unlikely to make a match with a higher Avalon family, so the parents of both children were glad they had fallen in love. The two families could both benefit from this match and a date was set.
Morgan and Elaine were inseparable. It was almost a shame their parents approved as they often joked about how exciting it would be to elope together. However, as the wedding day approached, Morgan became a little uneasy. He began to doubt the future, and realised he wasn’t ready to settle down. He was so very much in love, and so put these feelings aside. However, something nagged in the back of his mind.
Two nights before the wedding, he went out for the evening with a few of his friends. Morgan’s upcoming nuptials became the topic of conversation and much joking around. His friends nagged him that he’d not be able to court the ladies anymore. Something in the joking must have got to Morgan, and he found his attention moving to Sarah the local barmaid. She had always had a soft spot for Morgan and enjoyed the flirting that resulted as the drink flowed. Unfortunately, Morgan had a better tolerance for ale than his friends. He eventually found himself alone with Sarah, the others having fallen asleep in a stupor on the tap room floor. The drink and insecurities Morgan was burdened with took their toll, and he took Sarah upstairs where they spent the night together.
Things might have worked out, had Morgan and Sarah not overslept badly the next day. Elaine went to look for her errant husband to be. Fate, and half remembered tales from Morgan’s friends brought her to Sarah’s room and she discovered Morgan and Sarah sleeping naked together. Morgan tried to explain, saying how Sarah meant nothing and Elaine was everything, it was just a stupid mistake. Elaine was heartbroken. She didn’t rage at Morgan, she just turned and left in tears. That was the last Morgan ever saw of her.
He thought the look in Elaine’s eyes was the worst he would see, until he turned and looked at Sarah. She had been there, listening to Morgan’s excuses, but to her it had been different. She was in love with Morgan too, and their night together hadn’t meant nothing to her. His words had cut her heart to ribbons, and made her feel like some cheap whore as well. Morgan tried to apologise, but no words came, everything he wanted to say was hollow and meaningless. He dressed in silence and left.
That very day Morgan realised he couldn’t stay in Avalon any more. It wasn’t that his reputation was ruined or that his family were angry at him for messing up the marriage. Both things were true, but nothing was as much a burden as what he had seen in the eyes of Elaine and Sarah.
He decided to leave Avalon and seek his fortune. He put on a brave face, but everything he does it an attempt to wipe the image of the two women he hurt so deeply. He believes himself a monster, and while he loves to dally with the ladies, he makes no commitment and no promises. He hopes to drown his feelings of guilt in the arms of as many ladies as he can find, trying desperately to make himself believe he is as carefree as he appears. He fears love, and does not consider himself worthy of it. So while he will seduce and romance any woman he finds, he will not allow her to love him. He many be a monster, but he’ll not see that pain again on another living soul.
