The Village of Spirits

8th Septimus - Altamira: assigned as shield man to Bjarne something-or-other-unpronouncable. Korov followed (not happy as I am his shield man, not to be assigned to just anybody). Now I am guarding both of them.

10th Septimus - Now we are in a pissant little village in southern Eisen. No idea why. There is a Strega in the group. Not happy.

11th Septimus - Much weirdness. Stories becoming real and writing themselves. Sort of. Using us as the ‘characters’. Confusing. My head hurts.

13th Septimus - Story stuff all sorted. Hope Korov understands what happened better than I do. Glad I don’t have to write report to Explorers.
Strega now knows I am Vodacce Lord, not Eisen Peasant. Inconvenient. Managed to kiss her and pinch bum ?. Got cursed ?.

Family & Freiburg

14th Septimus - Heading for Freiburg by river boat. Entertainment by barge captain Eva ‘of many guilds’ ?.

17th Septimus - Arrived in Freiberg. Axel in trouble with his father. Seemed to think he could change crest on new Dracheneisen broadsword to von Wendel family crest without family hearing about it.
Beat Axel in fight in front of daddy. Go Reinhard!
Bjarne & I made idiots of ourselves in front of important Explorer lady.
Ended up in a duel with crumbly old fart I was trying to rescue Francine from. Francine then willingly spent the night with him anyway (she must be in need of some extra cash). Won’t bother trying to rescue her next time.

18th Septimus - Departed Freiburg.

21st Septimus - Arrive Hafen after more entertainment from Cap’n Eva.

Maiden Voyage

22nd Septimus - Bound for Crieux on small ship. We get free passage for guarding a Vesten prisoner. Easy job.

23rd Septimus - Axel got in prize boxing fight with one of ship crew. He is all big and muscley & ‘Roberto’ was drooling.

24th Septimus - Captain murdered. Crew don’t like me (accused me of doing it). Not used to being on ship my family don’t own, so have accidentally been a bit bossy. Must remember: supposed to be peasant. Zombie pirates attacked ship.

25th Septimus - Zombies attacked again. Ship sank. Mighty Vesten magic no use at all. Nearly killed myself going back into sinking ship to rescue initialled sword with Villanova crest. Family still obviously v. important to me.

26th Septimus - Picked up by Explorer Ship The Discovery. Bjarne is staying with them.

Dining with Dreams

27th Septimus - Arrive Crieux. Told everyone I’m really Pietro Villanova.

28th Septimus - Axel has joined the Knights of the Rose & Crown Cross. Let’s see how long that lasts…

29th Septimus - Fiora is here ?. Doesn’t seem too unhappy about the bum pinching incident. Seems to like Lord Villanova more than Reinhard the peasant. Party this evening.

30th Septimus - Fiora came to my room last night. Wow! If I didn’t know better I’d suspect she was courtesan trained.
Stupid book thing up to its tricks again. Big fight. We won. Some messing around with Sidhe and highlanders in Highland Marches. Tried to shoot a Sidhe but it caught the arrow! Hope this is the end of it now. Fiora has kept book because she can’t read it. If any of this makes any sense I am the Emperor of Montaigne.

7th Octavus - Fantastic evening with Fiora. Cost a mint, but worth it. Boat, flowers, restaurant, musicians. She is not talking about the other night.

The Heart of Matushka

14th Octavus - Idunn Lars (Vendel rich girl) is looking for the Vesten we ‘allowed to escape’ from the boat with the zombie pirates. Fiora in bad mood. Found out I’m married. Duelled Umberto Corattzi: turned him into pin cushion & he didn’t even touch me. He says I have a daughter. Liar.

15th Octavus - Fiora still in bad mood. Bad party. Got drunk & rained on. Someone broke into Explorers warehouse. Stole Heart of Matushka that wasn’t even supposed to be in there.

16th Octavus - Hangover. Ussurans. Yet another party.
Don’t like parties any more.
Starting to suspect it wasn’t Fiora I slept with the other night. Think it was shape-changing demon bug lady wife of party host.

17th Octavus - Library. Musketeers. Still looking for Heart of Matushka.

18th Octavus - Let Ussurans out. Tried to set up Axel with cabin boy at dockside tavern.

19th Octavus - Axel sent cabin boy to my room. His name is Louis. He is very good ?.
Went to Avalon by Porté hole. Voices said hurtful things that are mostly true: nearly stayed in hole with them. Don’t like Porté travel. Fiora still hates me. V. unhappy.

20th Octavus - Chartered boat. Captured Vesten bad guy. Not sure it’s the same Vesten. Sailed back to Crieux.

21st Octavus - Attacked by peasants. Met Pyotyr = Ussuran accuses me of stealing Heart of Matushka even though I’m an explorer. He is explorer too, but thick as pigshit peasant bodyguard, whereas I am now Field Scholar since I told Explorers’ Society who I really am ?.
Spent night with Louis.

22nd Octavus - Got back Heart of Matushka. Silly Montaigne put it in ice sculpture. Sent it back to Ussura with Pyotyr.
Louis again ?.

23rd Octavus - Spent final night with Louis before leaving to conduct field work for the Explorers in Charouse. No-one else cares that I am leaving.

Secrets, Sewers & Serenades

14th Nonus - Charouse: violin recital. Idunn & a priest provided comedy interlude. Maybe Fiora is here with them?

15th Nonus - Met the priest & an uppity Avalon called Richard. Richard all yappy until I suggested we duel. Then very quiet. He is cute.
Erbaldo Bernoulli is a git.

17th Nonus - Idunn tried to set me and Richard up together. Seemed convinced he was interested. He wasn’t. Everyone I like turns me down.

19th Nonus - Fiora’s Place. Thrown out. Arrested.
[Note written later:] I am too good a shot with the bow. Axel was in a fight and seriously outnumbered, so I decided to even things out by shooting a few arrows into the rabble. Killed one of them. Suggested to the Father that we deal with it the Vodacce way and throw corpse in river. We have body between us like drunk person when Musketeers show up. Put up a good show of pretending to take drunk friend home (shock horror! He’s dead! No! Wake up, Charlie! etc.) until Musketeer says, “Why has he got an arrow in him? Is that a bow you are carrying, Sir?” So I say, “Shit! How did that get there?” and they arrest us.
Decided to drop Axel in it by telling them a ‘big bastard of an Eisen’ did it and ran away, so they went and arrested him too.

20th Nonus - Let out. Cemetery. Boom.

22nd Nonus - Saw Fiora again. She is being all cold and horrible now.

24th Nonus - Everyone has left suddenly except Richard. Will use opportunity to get to know him better. Hope he will change his mind about me.

27th Nonus - Got a letter from Idunn. They are all on a ‘secret’ mission in Ussura.

16th Decimus - Arrived Freiburg (Explorer business). Axel has told his Father I am Pietro Villanova. Was on my way to tell him anyway. Daddy von Wendel a little miffed, but not too miffed. Pietro is on a sort of probation because it doesn’t change the fact that he (i.e. Pietro = me [getting confused here]) saved his daughter’s life).
Note to self: stop confusing Reinhard and Pietro. They are both me.

17th Decimus - Said goodbye to everyone. Made Idunn cry.

18th Decimus - Left for Vodacce and uncertain death at the hands of the Caligari. Prophets’ Mass is going to be fun this year. Not.

Erebus Cross part 3 – The Arrow of Heaven

25th Quartus - Dionna Island. Met the old group again. Explorer business: stop Reginald Coleson messing with v. dangerous Syrneth site in Villanova swamp. Cousin Giovanni very helpful.

26th Quartus - Very accommodating Avalon jenny named Alison knew who I am and didn’t shout at me or try to hit me or anything. Idunn & Axel obviously not doing as good a job as usual at slagging me off. Arrived Porta Serafina.

27th Quartus - Swamp. Pyotyr & Coleson there. Coleson says my opinion not worth much as I “used to be a Shield man”, and I am “friends with that loony, Korov”. Much shouting about whether to use compass to turn on doom machine.
Pretty light show. Big fight. Killed a Caligari and minions.
Axel and I sneaked off to visit machine. Thought about testing compass in it, but decided we like Théah the way it is. Fewer Caligari would be good, but we’re working on that. Don’t need machine to kill Caligaris. Took some sketches and rubbings of Syrneth script and diagrams for later study.
Alison still very accommodating. Hope she won’t hand me big bill after all this.

28th Quartus - Left swamp. Met fleeing Villanova (!) coach full of jenny courtesan & 2 Strega. Swapped horses for coach, and ladies swapped clothes.
Now we are Lord Villanova and retinue heading for Porto Spatia.

29th Quartus - Scrivelli family are pests. They poked around a bit. Found out they’d been chasing wrong Strega. Left. Lucky I am actually a Villanova.

Tangled Strands of the Caligari

1st Quintus - Arrived Porto Spatia. Syrneth artefact hunt on collapsing island. Pyotyr punched me in face for accidentally putting arrow into Viola who is now Orlando! And people say I have an identity problem…
How was I supposed to see it was her? Thought she was one of the Caligari. I was going way too fast sliding down the stairs on a shield. Whee! Fun?.
Not so fun landing in a heap in the middle of a pack of Caligaris ?.
Alison looks stunning in burgundy red courtesan dress. Looking forward to removing it ?.

2nd Quintus - Have been invited to Prince Villanova’s palace by Lady Fiora of all people. Wonder what she wants & why she’s hanging around with my cousin.
Sort of helped save shopkeepers from burning building. Axel and Orlando did all the real work. I was crap. Since when was Viola / Orlando stronger than me? Feel weak and kitteny in comparison.
Dueled Pyotyr with knife. Won. Not so weak and kitteny.
Alison doesn’t think I’m crap ?

3rd Quintus - Pyotyr punched me again. Bastard broke my nose and has run away. Good move. He is now on my ‘to kill’ list.
Alison v. angry all of a sudden. Seems to think my comment about burning peasants included her. Kicked me where it really hurts. Women and their bizarre logic!

4th Quintus - Everyone else sorted out the shopkeepers and extortion racket thing. Too sore to move. V. unhappy. Hope nose doesn’t end up all bent and ugly. Alison will no doubt dump me for someone pretty like Richard or Sir Oswald. What is it with these Avalon?
On subject of Sir Oswald: said something to Alison about her flirting at him, and the whole red underwear on show thing. Shouldn’t have. Not my place to tell her not to practise her trade. She is not making a living off of me. Actually I owe her money.
Must get on right side of Father and weasel some cash out of him when I get back to Dionna.

8th Quintus - Alison is the only woman I like who does not treat me like something revolting she just stepped in.

9th Quintus - Being careful not to use L-word re. Alison. Previous experience = as soon as Pietro uses L-word, person in question turns around and kicks Pietro in teeth (ref. Fiora, Richard).

10th Quintus - Things about to get difficult. Wife and woman I was in love with both in Dionna with my cousin the Prince. Now I am going there with Alison. There is going to be trouble.

Cabora

11th Quintus - Oh crap!
Bloody Bernoullis not lying. I have a daughter. Evil wife creature says girl is mine, but not mine. Am not allowed to see or talk to her. We shall just have to see about that.
Rosina wife thing and Prince V want me to kill Rosina’s ex-lover in a duel to restore family honour and make it look like I care. I shall take great delight in skewering the bastard. Considering poisoning sword blade to give me added advantage. Bad Pietro.
Also considering killing her new lover as well as old one.
Fiora all cold and horrible as usual. She is only here to pass on message that Tessatore want to talk to us. She is marrying a Castillian in Gallegos in about 2 days time. Invited me to wedding like she really didn’t want me to go. Alison making me go. Wants escort.
Just for record: I do not care that Fiora is getting married. See me not caring! La la, I don’t care! Etc. Serves her right. Hope he is old and ugly.
Sex with A. on Prince’s banqueting table after everyone left. Bet Giovanni and Juliette have done it there too...

12th Quintus - Flirted with Sir O. at breakfast. He did not notice. Told him Orlando fancies him & he should be careful because poor sap followed Axel around for years before finally getting message Axel really not interested. Also told him Orlando likes wearing dresses and pretending to be a girl. He said, “Even if Orlando wears a dress and pretends to be a girl, I will still not find him at all attractive. I am very traditional when it comes to that sort of thing.” He is pretty but not the sharpest sword in armoury.
Axel was listening in. Looked very puzzled. Also not sharpest sword in armoury.
Visited Luisa (= daughter). I made that! ? Cute. Managed about 2 sentences before Scrivellis showed up and menaced me into leaving. Did not make idiot of myself. Walked out not thrown out. Wife must be disappointed. Ha!
Wife still evil. Threatened to kill me if I try to see L. again. I said ‘Try it!’. Not scared of her any more. Was hoping we could be more reasonable towards one another after five years apart. No such luck.
Will not give up on Luisa. Will also work on wife thing. Considering it a challenge. Wonder which of my strands she’ll snap next. Hate that. Don’t want to think about it. Did I say not scared?
Writing much more than usual. Lots happening.
Never thought much about spiders before. Now I am spider-phobic ?.
Tessatore lady told Alison she used to be Strega, but someone messed up all her strands. Explains why she can’t remember things. Lucrezia fixed her up, but not very well. Q. Did Lucrezia also do the breaking? If not, who did? Will break them if I find out. Grrr.
All our strands (esp. A’s & the priest’s) point to Caligari island. Good thing. Needed to go back there anyway. Have dungeon to break into.
Francine is a bitch.
A. taking news v. bad. Tried to cheer her up with inappropriate humour. Only avoided having face broken again by dodging v. fast and giving her my “I’m-cute-please-don’t-hit-me” grin. Must remember it doesn’t work so well with face all smashed up.

12th Quintus - (later) Everything happens while I’m not there. Axel has got into duel with another Villanova & Orlando has found his/her sister (= Regina wife of aforementioned Villanova). Must find out who he is – may know him. Axel duel tomorrow. It is to the death ‘cause Axel = stupid Eisen doesn’t understand Vodacce duelling conventions, can’t speak Vodacce, solves problems by hitting them.
Won my duel. Depressing. Arrogant blond object, convinced he’d win. I kept mouth shut. More dignified if I die, cool & businesslike if I win. He all mocking & “Is there something wrong with your face?” etc.
Blondie got first blood. Thought I might die then, but I got next hit in and really did some damage. After short ‘time out’ we started again & I stabbed him right through throat. This still did not shut him up! Last thing he gurgled was, “That’s not how she said it would go.”
Much arguing over Axel’s choice of weapon for duel tomorrow. Axel wants to fight with rapier. Orlando & the ladies want him to use panzerhand and broadsword. Assumption 1: Villanova uses Villanova school – have already proven Villanova school beats grab-blade-with panzerhand-bludgeon-opponent-to-death-Axel-technique. Assumption 2: Villanova will have at least one spare dagger hidden somewhere on his person to surprise Axel with. Assumption 3: All Villanova’s blades will be poisoned.
Told Axel assumtion 3 & offered him woundwort for his blade. Of all the times for Lord Axel “Kicked out of the Knights of the Rose and Cross for locking peasants in basement and torturing them with broom of doom” von Wendel to have sudden attack of ‘honour’! He said, “I would not sully my blade with such a substance,” rambled on about dishonour, then said, “Now I know what you think of me,” and stomped off. Curse these Eisen and their stiff necks!
Don’t suppose he’ll listen to rest of my advice now.
Orlando threatened to kill me.
Screw honour. Don’t want best friend to die. Maybe I can talk to this Villanova as family member: get him to go 1st blood or something instead.
Alison used L-word. Don’t know how to respond. Worried about her. Not sure she is in right mind. Jumped in canal to ‘find out if she could swim’, keeps looking at long drops off bridges / out of windows etc., wanders off, told me & Orlando she thinks she’s useless…
News: females plotting to ‘rescue’ Regina Villanova from her husband while Axel & he are duelling. Am I only person thinks this = really bad idea?

13th Quintus - Fiora apologised.
Sick of being punched in face. Father gave me new bruise, but also 650 Senators. Must have impressed him. Now I can pay A. back.
Axel lost duel, but OK: I used family influence to get it down to 2nd blood.
Bought puppies x2. One is Fiora wedding gift,

Females did their ‘rescue’ thing. They are still alive.

Note: “know” is Alison euphemism for “shag”. Feel silly: she asked, “Have you known a Castillian man?” I said, “Yes, Father Alejandro.” Then she asked again and I said “Yes, Father Alejandro!” Then she laughed at me and explained about Castillian passion. Apparently it has something to do with underwear. Briefly.
14th Quintus Arrived Malacha.
Bad Party. Got v. Drunk. Blazing row with Alison. Ended up shouting that I love her in every language I know including Old Thean. Stupid.

15th Quintus - Fiora wedding. Lucrezia. Told A I meant it: not just because drunk.
Fiora didn’t like other wedding present (don’t know about dog). Should have expected stupid hubby would tell her. Bloody Sebastian bloody Gallegos.

Still have dungeon to break into.
Sword wound in shoulder going bad. Poisoned. Looks like zombie shoulder – all pale and blue-veiny and yeuch. Hurts all the time now. Feel sick.
Orlando/Viola family tried to snatch her & take her back to Vodacce. Did not succeed.

16th Quintus - Dionna Island. Poison nearly killed me. Wish it had.

17th Quintus - Caligari Island: again.
Woke hoping yesterday hadn’t happened. Bugger. ?
A. up in rigging acting strange: threw shoe at Axel, then stripped. All cold and stand-offy. Has said she wants me to “woo” her (read it in her diary). Not in “wooing” mood owing to JUST HAVING SIGNED AWAY ALL RIGHTS TO LUISA TO SAVE OWN MISERABLE HIDE!
“Anton” is the man to ask about things. Asked him about Dungeon and nasty old men. Now he = dead.
Dead men can’t say how to get into dungeon, but can grip little bits of paper v. tight. Nothing re. dungeon – just nasty old men.
Naughty monkeys = Novus Ordo Mundi. New world order, eh? Can’t say we don’t need one. Wonder who, other than late cousin Fausto, wants one so badly they’ve formed stupid club to make it happen?
Going home: man jumped out of window on rope, carrying woman. Wounded Castillian in window says stop them, so we try, but they went in coach and we on foot, so no luck.
All I know about dungeon is secret entrance in sewers. Am used to sewers since Charouse. A’s strand points downwards now: coincidence?
Wonder if she still has that woundwort… [Note: wife used witherstorm. Only in season in Tertius – would have died v.quickly if still fresh. Rosina bought all remaining antidote on island ‘cause no-one making it now plant out of season.]

18th Quintus - Looking for Castillian’s girlfriend. Some of the others know them, but what in the seven hells do I care about these people?
How come I end up killing someone because I’m the only one not goofing around (for a change) and actually trying to get things done? Then I find out it’s the WRONG DAMN BOAT I sneaked onto!
Shit.
Got onto (wrong) boat, sneaked up behind sailor & put my hand over his mouth. Tried to knock him out with dagger hilt. Didn’t work. So now he’s struggling & trying to scream past my hand & I’m thinking if I’d just slit his throat in first place rather than trying to save the bastard I wouldn’t be in this mess.
So I slit his throat. Dropped him quietly into sea. Hoped no-one would notice, but A saw blood even though fall in sea washed most of it off.
Seems whenever I try to be hero like Oswald or Axel I screw up.
Found right boat. Got on board unnoticed again. Argument going on between kidnapper and ship Captain. Called out kidnapper. Big mistake.

All over by time I came round.

19th Quintus - Caligari Island, sunk, had to get off it, got wet again. A screw up of this size can only be due to the others.

20th Quintus - Dionna. Alone.
No sign of others. Must find out what Alison’s songbird eats. She’ll never forgive me if I don’t look after it properly.
They wouldn’t let me go to dungeon with them (too injured). Then Island sank. Probably collapsed on top of them.
Met Aiden. Told him news. Got drunk.

21st Quintus - Bought bird seed.

23rd Quintus - Father surprisingly tolerant about wedding incident. Suggested I brush up sword technique so don’t get turned into pincushion again. Father = good teacher: practice/exercise takes mind off grief

24th Quintus - Still no word.
If they’d got away, any of them, I would have heard by now, surely?

27th Quintus - Still no word. Might have to write “deepest sympathy” letters.
How do I tell pregnant newly-wed her husband is dead, or friend’s father re. son?
Tell the Falisci re. Viola (yes/no)? Pyotyr? No, screw him – he can find out via Explorer grape vine. Don’t know about Sir Oswald’s family.
Oh crap! Eponine – fiancé and sister.
Alison? I already know. Don’t know who else to tell except Jenny’s Guild.
Should also tell Fiora, assuming she’ll accept communication from me.
Idea: ask mother to check strands before writing anything. Why didn’t I think of that before? Been away too long.
Thought: wonder if any survivors from inn will think it suspicious that a Villanova told them to get off island before its too late? Family will be under suspicion anyway, so just more grain for rumour-mill.
Thought2: Caligari island: talk of ‘finding plug’ was meant to be joke.

1st Sextus - Finally asked mother to check strands. Said I have same number as last time she looked but sometimes they can take time to fade. Not v. helpful.

3rd Sextus - Major political upheaval. Mondavi sent out assassins v. all the other surviving Princes. Only succeeded v. Lucani. Wife and daughters now on run. Also seized large chunk of Lucani and Caligari land. Falisci seized most of rest. Villanova typically has gained another small slice.

26th Sextus - They’re all alive. Alison back. Stupid argument in front of father. Threw wine at me (A. not father). Got told off again.

27th Sextus - Can never go home again. Juliette & Valentina Villanova murdered Prince’s sons then went on run. Helped before knew what they’d done. Stupid. Juliette took out Cousin Giovanni’s eye.
Now no home, no family, no money.

28th Sextus - Big argument with Alison last night. Accused me of chatting up barmaid, sleeping with Richard and going to visit Fiora! A. got barmaid to empty chamber pot over me. Jumped in sea to wash it off.

29th Sextus - Fiora’s place. Played with puppy.

30th Sextus - Borrowed horses. Heading for Altamira.

2nd Julius - Must find way of making money. A. has idea. Can introduce me to someone in guild. Not sure.

6th Julius - Altamira. Blew last of money taking Alison out.

7th Julius - River boat. On way to Charouse.

12th Julius - Captured by Inquisition. Let out for being Villanova. Family name still of some use after all. Sir Oswald let out later for being Knight of Elaine.

13th Julius - Vaticine City. Persuaded Bishop lady to take us to stronghold where she thinks others being kept.
Stronghold went boom just as we got there. Exploding inquisitor!

14th Julius - Everyone safe, but Alison sick (infection).
Everyone’s weapons still in stronghold (‘cept for mine and Sir O’s).
Scouted stronghold to look at hole. Richard & I went back later to check on guard situation. Richard missed guard change – too busy staring at my arse…

15th Julius - Richard & I sneaked into stronghold & dropped off blooded coin. Got discovered. Got shot. Escaped.
Francine got the weapons etc. back.

16th Julius - Depart for Charouse. Francine strangely cheerful. Creepy.

17th Julius - Arrived at Sierra del Fendes. Argument over route. Decided to go long way round via Altamira – Alison still ill, Axel’s leg broken & Richard badly injured.

21st Julius - Altamira.
Francine still cheerful. Seems forced. Still a bitch. Told me I am scrounger/moocher as have no money to pay for inn. Was going to sleep in street, but Axel paid.
Duelled with Sir Oswald. Supposed to be pulling blows, so I did ‘til he whacked me real hard with sword. Twice. Then I got even. Axel says I am better swordsman! Both pretending we are not hurt now. Good thing A. is still sick or I’d be in doghouse.

22nd Julius - Even more ouch. How come it always looks & feels worse the day after?
