Dante's Family

Dante Caligari grew up in a state of relative opulence. His father is a cousin of Prince Caligari and his mother is a note Fate Witch. In his formative years he proved to be an exceptional student and when he showed no great interest in becoming a priest he was sent to Diona University. After graduation his family hoped that he would settle down and turn his head to business. Unfortunately he was far more interested in art, in all its forms, and especially science which fascinated him. His parents arranged for him to be married to Rachele Fallici, a minor strega, and in time he actually developed strong feelings for her and was devastated when she died of a fever while carrying their child. If anything this motivated him to throw himself even further into his work. In time, as the power and reach of the Inquisition grew, he joined the Invisible College.

Always thinking in advance he had prepared plans to leave his home on Caligari Island at a moments notice long before he was told, to his astonishment, that the whole island was sinking. Grabbing his ready-bag containing his clothes, notes, plans, documents, etc he was one of the first to arrive at the docks and witness the chaos there as people bribed, threatened and fought their way onto the boats. While standing watching the scene he was grabbed by his cousin Ernesto and told of the many family members who needed help getting off the island. The next few hours were a nightmare of water running through the streets while he tried to persuade members of his family that they really didn't need to bring that third trunk of clothes with them. When he finally got off the island it was on one of the last boats and the water was waste height – leading him to have a lingering fear of water to this day. He reflects that he could have been off safely on one of the first boats – he probably saved lives by going back but isn't sure he'd do the same again.

After reaching the mainland he enacted previously drawn up plan to avoid the Inquisition and headed for Friedburg where he knew he could disappear without trace for a while until he knew what had happened to the Prince and where his family would be residing. When word reaches him he'll decide if he wants to return. He never understood the Prince's obsession with the Syreneth and hopes that this will be the end of his families association with the likes of the Explorer's Society.

Currently Dante lives in a brightly lit loft room in an artists quarter of Friedburg. The room is a dishevelled mess of drawings of animal skeletons, half finished head sculptures, sheet music, dirty plates, an unmade bed in the corner, an almost complete painting of himself knelt in prayer before a Vatacine alter, an extensive chemistry set and piles and piles of books.

He is constantly ready to move on should he be surprised by the Inquisition. He keeps a ready-bag in his room containing clothes, a pistol, several kinds of money and his most important notes and documents. The majority of his money is kept in a large number of small jewels. These are kept in a number of secret compartments including the heel of one of his boots, the lining of his ready-bag, his sword scabbard, etc. Outside one of the windows of the loft is a zip-line across the street to the building opposite. From there he has mapped a path across the rooftops and away into the city. He hopes he will never need it.
